Bookbinding has changed over the past few centuries. 

Led by Rob Hadrill and Ina Baurmeister, Fundamentals of Bookbinding serves as a key introductory point into the world of bookbinding, covering the theory and practice of how to bind a book. This practical masterclass will demonstrate the different tools and materials that will be used.

Over five days, the masterclass will show examples of different styles of books that could be relevant to artists, photographers, and designers cover different methods, including:

  • Multi-section case binding

  • Japanese style binding

  • Exposed spine structure

  • Concertina style binding 

Useful Information

This masterclass will take place over five days from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Day One

  • Introduction to Bookbinding, includes a demonstration of different tools and types of material that will be used.

  • Part 1 – Multi-section case binding.

Day Two

  • Part 2 – Multi-section case binding. 

  • Japanese style binding, soft covers with stab stitching. 

Day Three

  • Binding styles using an exposed spine structure.

  • Part 1 – Short slideshow showing examples of artists’ books with opportunity for questions.

Day Four

  • Concertina style binding.

  • Part 1 – Slipcase designed to hold the books made during the course.

  • Part 2 – Short slideshow showing examples of artists’ books with opportunity for questions.

Day Five

  • Part 2 - Slipcase making.

  • Opportunity to work on a personal book project, with advice on how to continue once the course is completed.
