Understand the traditional techniques that have defined figurative portrait painting

This five-day masterclass explores the five traditional oil painting techniques; chiaroscuro, sfumato, grisaille, impasto, and glazing when used to paint portraits.

Through tutorials, demonstrations, and practical course work, participants will learn the anatomical structures of the human head and contemporary applications of these techniques to develop portraits on a conceptual level.

This course covers:

  • Acquiring a basic understanding of human head anatomy.

  • Creating a layered and intricate portrait.

  • Studying artworks by other artists to analyze techniques and strategies.

  • Learning appropriate terminology to discuss art materials and techniques that have developed throughout history.

  • Utilizing painting as a tool for generating ideas (a tool for visual thinking).

  • Gaining skills and confidence to fully realize the potential of painting as a powerful means of visual expression.

Who's it for:

Advanced painters with elementary experience with oil.

Material requirement:

Participants need to bring a photo portrait of (self-portrait or of a family member) to reference during the masterclass. The photo should have clearly defined lighting with distinct shadows and highlights.
