From concept to show, the art of exhibition making

Misk Art Institute has partnered with the School for Curatorial Studies in Venice for an intensive five-day masterclass on exhibition making, from concept to execution. The masterclass covers all that is needed to work in a gallery, museum, or any other art institution. 
Participants will have the opportunity throughout this practical and interactive masterclass to learn the methods of working in groups and how to competently work in the managements of arts. 

Topics Covered

Exhibition making involves a wide set of skills and capacities, the masterclass covers:

  • How to manage multiple professions simultaneously

  • How to engage with a variety of people and negotiate working conditions

  • The professional competencies needed to plan and manage a small gallery or exhibition office 

In addition to the theoretical aspect, participants apply their knowledge by curating and organizing a hypothetic exhibition thinking about:

  • Developing an idea for a show

  • Selecting artworks

  • Finding a location and organizing all the bureaucratic aspects that are required, including transportation and display

Outcomes

Participant will gain the tools and the skills needed to organize a show in a major venue as well as in small or private place.

Who’s it for?

Saudi curators, arts workers, gallerists, and exhibition makers.

  • Day One

Introduction to the masterclass.

The figures involved in an art event—identifying duties.
8:00 – 8:50 p.m. 
The functions in an exhibition office.
9:00 – 9:50 p.m. 
The role of the curator and how to conceive an exhibition. 

  • Day Two 

6:00 – 6:50 p.m. 
Practical workshop on how to conceive a curatorial project.
7:00 – 7:50 p.m. 
Presentation of the results of workshop.
8:00 – 8:50 p.m.
The process and methodology of displaying an artwork and selecting a location.
9:00 – 9:50 p.m. 
How to write requests to achieve a successful loan.

  • Day Three

6:00 – 6:50 p.m. 
Loan forms: the importance of the information and how to use them.
7:00 – 7:50 p.m. 
The condition report and the facility report, with some examples.
8:00 – 8:50 p.m.
Workshop—each participant will compile the loan form for the works of art chosen for their hypothetical exhibition. 
9:00 – 9:50 p.m. 
Examination of the work produced.

  • Day Four

Transportation and selecting the ideal transports for the works of the exhibition.
7:00 – 7:50 p.m. 
The arrival of the works in the venue, all the duties which needs to be figures out in order to prepare the venue.

The importance of having good graphic design
