Sergio Rojas Chaves

(b. 1992, Venezuela) Lives and works in Basel, Switzerland

Sergio Rojas Chaves is a Costa Rican artist based in Basel, Switzerland. His practice focuses on stories of interaction between human and non-human beings through performance, photography, installation, and video. His work navigates established binaries such as public/private space, productive/reproductive practices, wild/domestic nature, and care/control gestures. For Rojas Chaves, these amateur approaches bridge dichotomies, evidencing the permeability of science and ethics in everyday practices.

His projects have been part of individual and group exhibitions, most notably World’s Rainbow, Kunsthaus Baselland, Switzerland (2021); Houseplant Portraits, Country SALTS, Switzerland (2021); Cubo Negro, MADC, Costa Rica (2021); Erbacce, Italy (2020); Hands that feed, part of 4th Festival of Minimal Actions, Kunsthalle Wien, Austria (2020); Nature Distante, Centre d’art Neuchatel, Switzerland (2019) and many others.

In 2017 he participated in Alter Academia Residency in TEOR/ética and Karaoke Todos Los Días Residency in Despacio, both in Costa Rica. His work was on show at the X Central American Biennale in Limón, Costa Rica, and the 1st Performance Festival in Reunión, La Tigra, Honduras (2018) and in Freetown, Sierra Leone (2021).
